Editing dates

As you add in your events to Debtinator, you need to let the app know how frequently things recur. That's handled via the Repeat Rule popup. You have immediate access to several common repetitions, but the real power is in the last choice - Custom.

Choosing the Custom rule pops up the custom rule editor, which allows you to specify when things repeat with much greater granularity. This is where you specify that something occurs every other week, or on the 15th and 30th of every month, or pretty much anything else you can think of.

Setting the next date

To set the next date:

  1. Click on the "Recurring" popup, and choose the appropriate item. A few common choices are listed first, or you can choose the last item - "Custom" to specify with more granularity.

Custom Repeat Rule Allows you to do this
Daily
Specify that something occurs every day, every 3 days, every 17 days, and so on.
Weekly
Specify that something occurs on a given day of the week. You can also specify multiple days during the week ("Every Saturday and Sunday"), or skip weeks. For example, if you get paid every other Friday, then here you'd set your pay day to Every 2 weeks on Friday.
Monthly

Specify that something occurs on a given day of the month, as well as how many months apart they should be. So if you get paid on the 15 and 30th of every month, you'll specify that here.

Debtinator is smart enough to adjust dates if they happen at the end of a short month. For example, if you get paid on the 31st of every month, then in November it'll log you as getting paid on the 30th, on the 28th (or 29th!) of February, and so on. Plus, if you have two events right next to each other, say an expense that's due on the 30th and the 31st, it's smart enough to handle both of them for you. You'd just see it show up twice in months with 30 days.

The perform on closest weekday checkbox allows you to move the event to either the Friday before (on Saturdays) or Monday after (on Sundays). Even though you actually get paid on the 15th, your company many actually deposit the funds on the closest day, and this is how you can specify that.

Yearly
You can use the yearly popup to specify that something occurs only in certain months out of the year. For example, you may only need to pay for your pool membership in the summer, so you can go into here and select May, Jun, Jul, Aug as the due dates, and those bills will only be due in the summer.
Monthly, by weekday
Some things don't happen on a set date of the month, they happen by whichever day it is in the month. For example, Thanksgiving is the 4th Thursday in November. You can set that up here.
Monthly, by last weekday
Likewise, some events are defined the same way, but counting from the end. Memorial Day, for example, is the last Monday in May. Set that up here.

Testimonials
Thank you for your excellent app, I have used quicken, it's a beast, snowmint's budget and it is kinda sorta close, but yours is the first app that thought like I did. I have used an excel spreadsheet to play 'what-if / when' and your app has completely replaced any need for that, thanks again.
